Last week, as a part of our sports unit, we were able to watch the film McFarland USA and also learn about La Lucha Libre - a very popular sport in Mexico which is a version of wrestling. Below, you can see fourth period trying out their luchador masks we made!

Last week, students participated in a Quinceanera breakout in which they had to solve puzzles around the room in order to break into a locked box in the middle of the group. During this activity, they not only reviewed their Spanish skills, but also were able to work collaboratively, engage critical thinking skills, and assume leadership roles among their teams!
Are you interested in continuing your Spanish study or even begin learning French abroad? Well, Oxbridge Academic Program invites you to obtain information about spending a few weeks during the summer to travel abroad. You may find some information on this program below or stop by my room - flyers and information request forms are located on our door!
¡Bienvenidos a Quarter 2!
First quarter was quite the success! During our time, students learned about family, identity, pets, weather, time, among other basic things to help lay a foundation. As we move into quarter two, our focus will begin to change as we work to get our target language use up to 90% before the end of the quarter. In addition, this quarter will have a larger emphasis on culture. Here is what we can expect: October 10-13 Review week, PSAT, Mini Unit on Sports October 16-23 McFarland USA Film - PG Disney Film - Centers around Sports and La Quinceanera October 24-25 La Quinceanera October 26 - Assessment October 27-31 Holidays November 1-2 - Day of the dead November 3 - 9 Holidays wrap up November 13-27 Tumba (Novel) December 1-6 Review Exam Schedule: 3rd Period - December 7th 2nd Period, 4th Period - December 8th Please note that the exam exemption policy is any student with a 90% or higher average from Q1 and Q2 will be eligible to be exempt from the exam if they do not have more than 3 unexcused absences. La fiesta del pueblo will be held this year in Downtown Raleigh on Sunday 9-24 starting at 12:00 PM. This will be held at the 400 block of Fayetteville Street in the Raleigh City Plaza. This is a great opportunity to connect with hispanic communities. This event will be a great way for students to experience the culture first hand and become educated in the communities around them. It is free and open to the public! More information may be found on their facebook here.
Two weeks ago, students participated in their first breakout of the quarter and it was quite a success! This game seeks to promote critical thinking along with collaboration and communication skills. Essentially, students are provided with clues spread out around the room (completely in Spanish!) with one task - unlock a box that has 5 locks on it within 45 minutes with minimum assistance. Most classes took about 35 minutes to escape!
Tarea Semanal - Students have been doing awesome work on our Tarea Semanal weekly homework assignments. Check out some student creations below! Many students have created memes in Spanish, worked on Duolingo, recreated works of art from the Spanish Speaking world, ordered food in local restaurants using Spanish, watched films or tv shows in Spanish and even spent time engaging with the music using things like Pandora. I am blown away by the talent of our classes and am always looking forward to see which activities they completed!
For parents who wish to join Remind - check out the links below to learn how! Also check out our newsletter with some cool updates about what has been happening in class the last two weeks and upcoming assignments.
